Riccardo Calafiori is increasingly becoming one of Mikel Arteta’s most versatile weapons at Arsenal. The Italian defender strengthened that reputation with an influential display in the Community Shield, scoring almost immediately as the Gunners defeated Manchester City 3-0 to begin the 2026/27 campaign with silverware.
Calafiori opened the scoring after only 23 seconds at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. The move started with Arsenal pushing numbers forward from the opening whistle, before Myles Lewis-Skelly found Calafiori making an unexpected run into Manchester City’s penalty area. The defender stayed composed and finished past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Kai Havertz later doubled Arsenal’s advantage before captain Martin Odegaard added the third shortly after half-time, completing a convincing 3-0 victory. The performance impressed Arteta, who praised his team’s intensity and willingness to attack the game from the opening seconds.
Calafiori Offers More Than Traditional Defending

What makes Calafiori particularly valuable to Arteta is his ability to operate beyond the traditional responsibilities of a left-back or central defender.
According to Arteta, the Italian has the potential to develop into a complete player because Arsenal can ask him to occupy different areas of the pitch. His attacking instincts allow him to arrive around the opposition penalty box at the right moment, while he is still expected to complete demanding defensive assignments.
That versatility has already been visible during his time in north London. Calafiori is comfortable moving into midfield areas when Arsenal have possession and can make aggressive forward runs when space becomes available.
During periods when Arsenal were short of attacking options last season, Arteta even encouraged the defender to spend more time around the opposition box. Such instructions underline how differently Arsenal can use him depending on the tactical situation.
His goal against City provided a perfect example. Rather than remaining in a conventional defensive position, Calafiori recognized an opportunity to attack space and suddenly appeared inside the penalty area.
Arsenal’s Tactical Fluidity on Display

Calafiori himself suggested the unusual nature of the opening goal reflected Arsenal’s broader identity. Three defensively minded players—Ben White, Lewis-Skelly and Calafiori—combined high up the pitch to create the breakthrough. For Calafiori, the identity of the player occupying a particular zone matters less than properly fulfilling the role required by the system.
That philosophy is central to Arteta’s Arsenal. Defenders are expected to contribute to possession and attacks, while offensive players must work aggressively when the team loses the ball.
Arteta was particularly pleased with Arsenal’s willingness to recover defensively after committing players forward against City. Although he admitted the team is still far from perfect, the manager praised the intensity with which his players tracked back and competed throughout the match.
Calafiori fits naturally into that approach because he combines physical defending with confidence on the ball and an appetite for joining attacks.
Fitness Remains the Biggest Challenge

The main question surrounding Calafiori is not necessarily his technical ability but his availability.
Arteta has previously acknowledged that injuries have interrupted the Italian’s momentum. In April 2026, the Arsenal manager said Calafiori had performed better than during his previous campaign but stressed the importance of keeping him fit for longer periods.
That concern remains significant because Calafiori’s energetic playing style places substantial physical demands on him. Arsenal want him defending wide areas, moving centrally, carrying the ball forward and occasionally arriving inside the opposition penalty area.
Arteta believes those responsibilities are possible precisely because Calafiori has the qualities to perform them. The challenge is maintaining the physical condition required to execute such a demanding role throughout a long season.
A Major Weapon for Arsenal’s Title Defence

The Community Shield victory also offered Arsenal an encouraging start as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown. Arteta said winning another trophy reinforced the squad’s desire to experience further success after last season’s championship.
For Calafiori, starting the new campaign with a goal and a trophy could provide additional momentum. He described the victory as an ideal way to begin the season and highlighted Arsenal’s aggressive identity as one of the reasons behind the early breakthrough.
His importance, however, will not be measured purely by goals. Calafiori gives Arteta tactical flexibility that few conventional defenders can provide.
If Arsenal can keep him healthy, the Italian’s ability to defend, step into midfield and unexpectedly appear in dangerous attacking positions could make him one of the most useful pieces in Arteta’s system throughout the 2026/27 campaign.
