Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has publicly defended Vinicius Junior following a tense LaLiga match against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. The Portuguese manager believes the Brazilian winger was repeatedly targeted by opposition players and placed under unnecessary pressure throughout the game.
Real Madrid eventually secured a 2-1 victory, but the result did not stop Mourinho from addressing several incidents involving Vinicius. In his view, the physical treatment received by the winger went beyond normal competitive challenges and appeared to be part of a wider attempt to frustrate him.
Vinicius Faced Pressure from the Opening Minutes

One of the first notable incidents came early in the match when Vinicius was involved in a challenge with Alex Calatrava. The Brazilian went to the ground after contact, and Real Madrid players immediately protested what they believed was an unnecessary follow-up action.
Despite those complaints, no card was shown for the incident.
Mourinho later suggested that the challenge was not an isolated moment. He felt several Espanyol players took turns applying physical pressure on Vinicius, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for one of Madrid’s most dangerous attacking players.
According to the coach, repeated contact of that kind can eventually affect a player emotionally, especially when it begins in the early stages of a match and continues for long periods.
Mourinho Still Wants Better Emotional Control

Although Mourinho strongly defended Vinicius, he also acknowledged that the winger must continue improving his emotional control on the pitch.
Vinicius is known for playing with intensity and personality, and that can sometimes lead to heated exchanges with opponents or supporters. Mourinho reportedly reminded him to be careful with his reactions and celebrations because those moments can easily escalate tension.
The message was not intended to restrict Vinicius’ personality, but rather to protect both the player and the team from unnecessary disciplinary problems.
Mourinho went as far as describing the treatment received by the Brazilian as a form of bullying, arguing that the pressure came not only from opposition players but also from sections of the crowd.
For the Real Madrid coach, aggressive football is acceptable, but deliberately trying to provoke a player is a different matter.
Real Madrid Still Found a Way to Win

Despite the tense atmosphere, Real Madrid managed to leave the RCDE Stadium with all three points.
Jude Bellingham gave Madrid the lead in the first half with a header, but Espanyol responded and managed to level the score. The home side remained organised and made life difficult for Mourinho’s team.
Madrid continued searching for the winner and finally found it late in the match.
Substitute Carlos Espà scored in the 90th minute to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory. The goal gave Mourinho a positive start as he continued his second spell in charge of the Spanish giants.
The Portuguese coach also praised Espanyol after the match. He admitted that the home team had been competitive and well organised, even though he felt Madrid had done enough overall to deserve the victory.
Treatment of Vinicius Becomes a Talking Point Again
Controversy surrounding Vinicius is not new in Spanish football. The winger has often been involved in intense matches where strong tackles, verbal exchanges, and reactions from the stands become part of the story.
Mourinho’s latest comments have once again raised the debate over where the line should be drawn between physical defending and deliberate provocation.
Vinicius remains one of Real Madrid’s most important attacking players. His pace, dribbling ability, and willingness to take on defenders make him extremely difficult to stop in one-on-one situations.
That same style of play also means he frequently becomes the target of aggressive defensive tactics.
Madrid Need Vinicius Focused
For Real Madrid, keeping Vinicius focused could be crucial throughout the 2026/2027 season. Mourinho appears determined to protect his player publicly while also demanding greater emotional discipline behind the scenes.
That balance may become increasingly important in high-pressure fixtures.
The victory over Espanyol gave Madrid three valuable points, but Mourinho’s post-match comments ensured that the discussion did not end with the final whistle.
For now, Real Madrid move forward with a positive result, while the treatment of Vinicius remains one of the major talking points surrounding the club in the early stages of the season.
