Wenger Backs FIFA’s Decision to Abandon Private Investment Plan

Arsène Wenger believes FIFA made the right decision by abandoning its plan to involve private investors in the commercial operations of the World Cup. The former Arsenal manager also insisted that he had no role in developing the controversial proposal.

Arsène Wenger has addressed the controversy surrounding FIFA’s plan to open part of its commercial business to private investment.

Wenger, who currently serves as FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, said he was not directly aware of how the proposal had been developed. He claimed that he only learned about the plan after it was reported by the media.

According to Wenger, cancelling the project was a necessary decision. He believes FIFA must protect its independence, transparency and responsibility as the organisation that governs world football.

FIFA’s Proposal Faced Strong Opposition

The controversial proposal was connected to the planned creation of a new commercial company that would manage some of FIFA’s most valuable revenue-generating activities.

The company would reportedly have been responsible for areas such as broadcasting rights, sponsorship agreements, ticket sales and the commercial management of FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup.

Under the original proposal, FIFA considered selling a minority stake in the company to private investors. The money raised would then be used to support football development programmes and provide additional funding to national associations around the world.

However, the plan raised concerns that outside investors could gain too much influence over FIFA competitions and commercial decisions.

UEFA and Other Football Bodies Objected

Strong opposition came from UEFA and several other football organisations.

They argued that a major decision involving the future of the World Cup’s commercial operations should not be made without open discussions involving confederations and FIFA’s member associations.

Some officials were also concerned that private investment could encourage FIFA to prioritise financial returns over sporting interests.

As criticism continued to grow, FIFA eventually decided to abandon the proposal. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the project would not move forward because it had created division among the organisation’s members.

Wenger Denies Involvement in the Project

Wenger explained that his responsibilities at FIFA mainly focus on technical matters and the development of the game.

His work includes football academy development, match analysis, youth competitions, coaching education and projects designed to improve the standard of football in different countries.

Because of this role, Wenger stressed that he was not involved in investment discussions, the formation of the proposed commercial company or negotiations to sell a stake in FIFA’s business.

His comments were intended to clarify that he had no part in the project that later resulted in widespread criticism of FIFA’s leadership.

Questions Remain Over FIFA’s Decision-Making

Although the investment plan has been cancelled, the controversy has continued to raise questions about how FIFA makes major decisions.

Several football organisations questioned how a project involving such a large amount of money could be developed without extensive consultation with member associations.

Criticism was also directed at Infantino. Some officials argued that the FIFA president had not provided enough information about the proposal’s purpose, possible benefits and long-term risks.

FIFA now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust and ensuring that future decisions are made through a more transparent and inclusive process.

Protecting Football’s Independence

Private investment can provide major financial benefits for sporting organisations. Additional funding could be used to improve facilities, support youth development and organise competitions.

However, investors usually expect financial returns from the money they provide. This could create pressure on an organisation to make decisions based primarily on profit.

If private investors gained an interest in broadcasting rights, sponsorships, ticket sales or major tournaments, FIFA could face accusations that commercial priorities were becoming more important than football development.

Wenger believes FIFA must remain independent and avoid becoming overly influenced by outside financial interests.

The cancellation of the proposal was therefore an important step in protecting FIFA’s integrity. However, the organisation must still improve transparency and involve its members more closely when making major decisions about the future of world football.
